Day 1!

So today was a bit hectic and veryyyy exhausting.  I got to the International Welcome Center early because of my flight and had to hang out there since I couldn’t meet up with Helen until 1:30.  I was the first one there.  As more and more people came in and out, it seemed that there were a lot of problems with the cabs and with the land people.  So many people went to and from the Center, trying to get into their houses when they were told to go there and being unable to get in.  Myself included.  I went back shortly after 1:30 and no one answered the door or the phone.  As I found out an hour later, she only had a ten minute slot when she was home from her lunch break

So I was the first to arrive at the Welcome Center and the second to last to leave.   I spent 9 hours there.  Luckily, I made friends with a lot of the girls.  Two of them are from Nebraska!  We walked around Kingston and it was soo cute.  Pictures to come.  We also got to know the campus a lot better.  A girl from the school offered to show us around.  She showed us the lounge/bar that’s right by the classroom buildings… where you can drink (cheaply!) in between classes — ha ha! The library is open 24/7 which is exciting news!

So far my favorite signs are:  “Give way” (their yield sign) and “Hump” (bump).  I will have to post pictures of all the good signs, too.

Helen, my land lady, is really really nice!  She seems very cool.  Right now she is at yoga.  I asked where I could pick up a used bike and she told me she has a spare one I could use!  She allows visitors and everything like that, too.  She has an 18-year-old daughter who is in Israel with a program for the year, working on an onion farm or something.  It’s her room that I’m in right now.

Ah, she’s home now and I have to get onto her wireless internet so Skype will work better.  I’m stealing from a local connection right now but it keeps disconnecting.

Can’t believe I’ve been awake since 9am yesterday.  It is now 4:30pm there and 9:30pm here.  (I really ought to get better at military time).  Can’t wait for sleep!

I will post pictures tomorrow.

Cheers!
